Undergraduate and Postgraduate Scholarship in Law funded by Yayasan Tun Suffian Foundation in Malaysia-2011

Since its establishment on 11 June 2002 the Tun Suffian Foundation, under the Joint Royal Patronage of Their Royal Highnesses the Sultan and the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, has, among other things, provided financial assistance to young Malaysians pursuing law studies and young lawyers attending educational seminars and conferences both here and abroad.
The Cambridge Tun Suffian Scholarship (modelled on the Rhodes Scholarships, the oldest international fellowships initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902 to bring outstanding students to the University of Oxford) has received official recognition from the authorities at Cambridge.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
LLB Scholarships (Maximum 4 years)
1. In addition to the full tuition fees payable by the scholar from the date of award of the Scholarship, the Foundation shall provide the scholar with:
- (a) An annual book and miscellaneous allowance of RM1,000.00;
- (b) An annual living expenses of RM9,000.00 payable in 2 half-yearly installments.
2. An LLB scholar must maintain a CGPA of above 2.7 in all his/her semester examinations, failing which the Board of Trustees of the Foundation reserves the right to have the scholar’s scholarship suspended or withdrawn.
LLM Scholarships (Maximum 1 year)
3. In addition to the full tuition fees, the Foundation shall provide the scholar with:
- (a) A book and miscellaneous allowance of RM2,000.00;
- (b) A living expenses of RM12,000.00 payable in 2 half-yearly installments.
PhD Scholarships (Maximum 3 years)
4. All PhD scholars are required to:
- (a) Take no longer than three years to complete their PhD course;
- (b) Ensure that their assigned supervisors submit once every three months a detailed report on the progress of their dissertation;
- (c) Agree that the Board of Trustees of the Tun Suffian Foundation reserves the right to have any scholar’s scholarship suspended or withdrawn should a negative report from a scholar’s assigned supervisor is received, it being understood that it shall be within the absolute discretion of the Board to decide whether a report is negative or otherwise.
5. In addition to the full tuition fees, the Foundation shall provide the scholar with:
- (a) An annual book and miscellaneous allowance of RM3,000.00;
- (b) An annual living expenses of RM16,000.00 payable in 4 quarterly installments.
Coditions applicable to all scholarships
6. In addition to all the terms and conditions earlier stated, ALL SCHOLARS must undertake:
- (a) That they are not in receipt of any other scholarship, fellowship or monetary grant from any other body;
- (b) That if at any time in the future a scholar obtains any other scholarship, fellowship or monetary grant from any other body, the scholar shall immediately inform the Foundation, in which event his/her Tun Suffian Scholarship would be withdrawn forthwith and all monies erstwhile expended by the Foundation on the scholar shall be refunded by him/her without delay.
PROCEDURE FOR THE APPLICATION OF SCHOLARSHIPS:
All applications for scholarships (except for the Tun Suffian Cambridge Scholarship, for which see below) are to be submitted to the DEANS of the respective universities, who shall thereafter forward to the Honorary Secretary at the following address:

LLM- Local Universities – Deadline for applications: 31 July
Candidates must submit a copy of the letter of admission within two months of obtaining admission to pursue the LLM course.
- Applicants must submit completed forms- this includes a 500-word essay (in English) as to why they would like to pursue the course.
- Applicants must submit a reference letter from a referee (academic).
LLB – Local Universities – Deadline for applications: 31 August
Candidates must submit a copy of the letter of admission to the university as proof of admission. If there are second or third year students, they should submit previous years’ results.
- Applicants must submit completed forms- this includes a 500-word essay (in English) as to why they would like to pursue the course.
- Applicants must submit a reference letter from a referee (academic).
PhD – Local Universities
Deadline: within two months of receipt of formal letter of admission to pursue the PhD degree from university.
- Candidates must submit a copy of the letter of admission to the university as proof of admission.
- Applicants must submit completed forms- this includes a 500-word essay (in English) as to why they would like to pursue the course.
- Applicants must submit a reference letter from a referee (academic).
LLM – University of Cambridge
Deadline for applications: within two months of receipt of a formal letter of admission to pursue the LLM degree from the University.
- Applications are to be submitted directly to the University of Cambridge Board of Graduate Studies in the appropriate Graduate Admission and Scholarship Application Form (GRADSAF), attaching therewith all relevant particulars required from the applicant.
- Arrangements have already been made for the authorities at Cambridge to forward all applications to the Honorary Secretary at the Foundation’s Secretariat at the Faculty of Law of the University of Malaya.
